Lulu
was my first competition dog and retired at the ripe old age of nine
years—only one leg shy of her MXJ. Now she gets to make therapy
visits, act as demo dog and mostly rule Stormy and me from the
comfort of the living room couch.
When
Lulu and I first started out in agility, people would look at us and
say “that’s great that you are here, BUT YOU HAVE A BULLDOG!” That
basically meant we were on our own as far as training was concerned.
Our training journey of green dog and green handler involved a lot
of learning on the fly. Along the way, we both discovered clicker
training and became instantly hooked. It allowed Lulu to think that
she was the one that was making me click, not the other way around….
a vital requirement when you are dealing with an independent breed
that would rather do everything their own way and on their own
terms.
